Day 746: Year in Review

Our first wedding anniversary. 🙂

2014 was a great year! There were many great times with family and friends and I have so much to be thankful for. Time really has flown by and I can’t believe 2014 is almost over. From family gatherings on weekends to a trip to Las Vegas, we did a lot this year! 2014 ending makes me sad in a way. The majority of the year had great times, but there were also some tough times, too. But, I had Scott, family, and friends by my side, which has always been a great feeling. Sorry, that was a long list! The toughest part of this year was losing my Aunt Carol in August. She was a very caring a special woman and I’m still having a hard time without her. I can’t imagine how her children, grandchildren, and husband must be feeling. But, we have definitely been there for each other through this difficult time. I miss her so much. It really hurts sometimes.

One great thing I was able to accomplish this year was that I finished scanning all of my mom and dad’s old photos. This project took years, and I’m finally done! I’m so glad we have all of them as digital copies. I should make 1,000 copies, just in case!

Overall, this year was a good one. I have so many wonderful people in my life and I’m glad I got to spend time with them. There were some changes this year, but I think they are for the better. I can’t wait to see what will happen in 2015! I think it will be a good year, too, especially since I have Scott and great family and friends to make memories with. Goodbye 2014, and welcome 2015!

Day 709: My Wonderful Aunt

Day 709: My Wonderful Aunt

Aunt Carol and me in 2005.

My family and I lost a wonderful woman last month: my wonderful Aunt Carol (see above photo of her and me). It’s hard to put into words how much she truly meant to me, but I’ll try. She was honestly one of the most kind, caring, and loving people I’ve ever met in my life. She never had a bad thing to say about anyone. She was there with me at birthday parties, vacations, random family game nights, graduations, and so on. She even visited me a few times when I moved away after college. Here we are in 1992 as she is trying to show me how to use the Skip-It:

Day 709: My Wonderful Aunt

My favorite times with Aunt Carol were the random game nights. We’d all go out to dinner and then play some sort of board or card game afterward. She loved to sing, so we’d randomly break into song as we played the games. It always made me laugh. Here are a few more photos of some good times together:

My Aunt Carol loved to dance, which are some of my favorite memories with her. I remember dancing with her on a cruise, just the two of us. I was embarrassed to dance by myself, so she went with me! She was always on the dance floor at weddings, too. We made her do some silly things in her lifetime, including this moment below:

Day 709: My Wonderful Aunt

Hanging out at Curtis Orchard in 2008.

When planning my wedding, Aunt Carol helped me out a lot and loved being involved. I got many e-mails from her checking in on things and she always mentioned how excited she was. She even wrote this on our wedding website: Rachel and Scott I am so very happy for you both. It’s a very special blessing to find the true love and the person with whom you can share your life. Remember to enjoy the next 582 days. Rachel and Scott I love you both and wish you all Gods happiness and blessings.

Here’s one of our last photos together:

As sad as we are right now, I feel lucky to have so many wonderful memories with her. She always put others before herself and showed me the true meaning of kindness. It’ll be difficult not to hear that sweet voice, but I know she will be watching over me and my family, as she always did while here on this earth. I love you, Aunt Carol, and you’ll be in my heart always.

Day 707: Anne’s Bridal Shower

Rachel, Day by Day

Day 707: Anne's Bridal Shower

My friend Anne is getting married!! We’ve been friends since middle school, so I get a little sentimental when my middle and high school friends get married and have babies. She’s been with Ted since July of 2004, too! I’m so happy for them. I went to her bridal shower recently at Greek Islands restaurant; the photo above is from the shower. The food was amazing; I need to eat Greek food more often. She got some very nice gifts! I got her a bar set that looked really cool; I kind of want to buy it myself. Here’s a photo of the bride-to-be!

Day 707: Anne's Bridal Shower

At the shower, my friend Stephanie (the maid of honor) made Anne play a game about how well she knows Ted. Stephanie asked Ted some questions ahead of time and Anne answered the same ones at the shower. It was cute and funny! Most of their answers matched. There was also a game involving photos of Anne and Ted and we had to guess their ages. I got most of them correct, so I won a prize!

It was also a really fun shower since I got to see some more high school and college friends! Andrea came and I got to meet her baby Katerina. Here’s a photo of the two of us hanging out:

Day 707: Anne's Bridal Shower

She relaxed on my lap for a while during the shower. We also tried to get her first selfie; it kind of worked! Here it is:

Day 707: Anne's Bridal Shower

Katerina isn’t looking at the camera, but we’ll work on that when she gets older. It was a nice shower and it was great seeing friends!

Off topic, how many hours of sleep do you get each night? I probably get around 6 or 7… I’m starting to think that’s not enough. I’m tired a lot, but I’ve gotten good and pushing through my sleepiness. And then I sleep A LOT on weekends. That’s probably not healthy. I need to work on that!

Have a good night! And go to bed early.

Thank you all for an outstanding 2013 and I can’t wait to see what happens in 2014!

Day 639: It’s Been Too Long

Rachel, Day by Day

Day 639: It's Been Too Long

I honestly don’t know why I have the urge to write about my dad right now. Maybe because I’m more of a writer than a speaker, so I like getting my thoughts and emotions out by typing or writing. Plus, I don’t think too many people read my blog anyway! But, today, he left this world 11 years ago. I had a very hard time with this last year; I thought 10 years was way too long and I got really upset. And now it’s 11 years. Sometimes I just don’t understand it. And I hate remembering this day occasionally. I’d rather think of him on his birthday or when I’m at a place that reminds me of him. Today’s date just sucks in general.

The photo above was taken on my wedding day; I had that charm made through Click here to look at the shop where I bought this charm. I definitely wanted him with me on my wedding day somehow, so I thought of this. On the other side of the charm, it says Here with me today and always. I really think he was with me.

I truly think the more years that pass by, the harder it gets. And the more I realize that all of these amazing and new people I met in the last 11 years won’t know my dad. They won’t know the most important man in my life, so it feels like those people won’t fully know me as a person. Sometimes I want to show people a small clip from one of our home movies just so they could kind of see what he’s like. It might be weird if I start carrying home movies around in my purse, though.

Anyway, I REALLY miss you, Papa. A LOT. That’s the point of this post.

Today is going to be a very busy and fun day for me, and I’m happy about that. Then I won’t be able to think as much. I’m going to a bridal shower this morning and then a fancy happy hour later in the evening. Lots of fun things! I’m happy to do fun things today.

I just thought I’d post another photo. Here’s my wonderful dad, my brother, and me.

Day 639: It's Been Too LongWell, time to get ready for the day. Hope you have a good one!

Day 638: Life After a Wedding

Rachel, Day by Day

Day 638: Life After a Wedding

It’s been a little over 3 months now since Scott and I got married. Time has really flown by; it feels like the wedding day was just yesterday! I thought I’d share some things with you about life after a wedding. Here’s a photo of my boxed up dress. It is a little sad seeing it in a box like that and knowing I won’t wear it ever again. Oh well; I still want to keep it since it’s pretty!

The first thing I thought I’d tell you is that changing your name is a really big pain. Right now I’m getting lots of mail with both my maiden name and current last name, and I’m sure it’ll be like that for a while. I have a GIANT changing-my-last-name checklist that anyone can borrow in the future. I’m still not 100% done doing this with everything. Maybe someday!

I found a few lists on the Internet of things you should do after a wedding in general. Here are a few specifics from almost every checklist. My opinions are in bold.

1) Clean and store your gown. (As you can see, I’ve already done this.)
2) Change your name. (Working on it, dammit! It’s taking time.)
3) Send thank-you notes. (Got that done about a month or two ago. Let me know if you never got one and I’ll yell at the post office.)
4) Give everyone your new address. (I didn’t move, so HA!)
5) Tackle registry returns. (I really didn’t have to do this much, except for a few things that were broken after bridal showers. Is this usually a big issue?)
6) Figure out finances. (We pretty much did that when moving in together.)
7) Send wedding announcements. (There’s one in the newspaper! Click here to see it. But, everyone who went to the wedding knows we got married, so I don’t think we need to announce it again. Maybe I’ll send an e-mail to everyone. In case you can’t tell, I’m kidding about the e-mail.)
8) Preserve keepsakes. (Most of our stuff is in a plastic bin right now, and some little things [my flowers, photos, and the cake topper] are around the house. Is that good enough?)
9) Sell wedding stuff. (Wow, I never thought of that. Anyone want anything?? Please??)
10) Finalize wedding photo album and DVD. (We got our DVD already and loved it! I also put together a nice photo album already, too. Yeah, I’m on top of things.)
11) Get involved with something new. (Why, because planning the wedding took over my life? I don’t think that’s true at all. I didn’t change anything in my normal routine because of wedding planning. It was just an extra thing to do! And if you’ve been reading my blog, you’ll see how awesome and busy this summer has been for me!)

So, there you go.

Here are some more thoughts for you! I’ve been doing a great job at printing and signing my new last name, but when I have to say my full name out loud (for example, when I pick up prescriptions, go to the bank, and so on), I have to hesitate and figure out my name now. I probably sound like an idiot, but I’ll get it eventually!

I had A LOT of fun putting our wedding photo album together. But, I love taking photos and putting photo albums together in general. I like documenting happy memories! I think my computer is going to explode one day since there are so many photos on it.

We watched our wedding DVD a lot when we first received it in the mail. Scott and I watched it by ourselves a few times, then with family and friends multiple times. I love our DVD, but I’m probably not going to watch it for a while now.

I don’t miss planning the wedding, so I never went through any sad period after the wedding (I heard that happens to some brides). It sort of feels like a big weight has been lifted off my shoulders and I can get rid of a bunch of checklists. Plus, I’m not very good at making decisions, so that got stressful at times. But, it definitely was worth it. Our wedding day was AMAZING and I had so much fun. I never felt so much love, care, fun, and happiness all in one weekend. It was wonderful having all of our friends and family all in one room. That was a perfect start to our marriage. I love the fact that Scott and I are married now. I like thinking back on all of our fun memories, but now I smile thinking about all the memories we will make as a married couple. Woo hoo! (I thought I’d wrap this up on a lighter note.)

Goodnight, everyone!

Day 620: Wedding

Rachel, Day by Day

Well, it’s time for me to write about our wedding. Be prepared; there are lots of photos in this post! And WARNING: THIS IS THE LONGEST POST EVER. I figured it would be nice to talk about mostly everything through photos. But, I should say that it was one of the most amazing days of my life and I always smile when thinking about it. Everything went perfectly and it was wonderful having all of our friends and family there in one place. I am so lucky to have Scott in my life and that day was full of love!

Day 620: Wedding Day 620: Wedding

I started out getting ready in the morning with Maggie and my bridesmaids; we went to a hair salon called K.E. Meridian. I really liked that place! They let us bring in food and drinks, and they did a great job on our hair and makeup. These photos above are from the hair salon! I like the group photo. Kendyl (the flower girl) was so cute while getting her hair done. She just kept staring at herself in the mirror and was silent. She might have been confused! We then went back to my mom’s house to eat some snacks, get dressed, and take some prewedding photos. Here are some!

Day 620: WeddingFrom left to right: Curtis, Jeremie, Ray, Caden, Scott, David, and Mickey

Day 620: WeddingFrom left to right: Renee, Christina, Andrea, Rachel (me!), Stacie, Kendyl, Sydney, and Melissa
  Day 620: Wedding

Scott and his groomsmen got ready and took some prewedding photos at the church. Aren’t all the bridesmaids beautiful!? Sometimes I can’t believe this day is over already. Anyway, my bridesmaid Melissa gave me a white balloon at my mom’s house to send a message to my dad. I REALLY loved that; thank you, Melissa! I want to tear up just thinking about it. Then, we got in the limo and headed over to the church!

Day 620: Wedding

We got to the church a bit early, so I sat in the back room with my bridesmaids. I really wanted to take a peak when everyone was walking in, but I couldn’t! I guess I’ll just have to see that part when we get the DVD. The ceremony was beautiful; Ray walked me down the aisle, which was nice. One of my favorite moments that day was waiting in the back room with him. It was hard not to think about our dad and it was a nice moment with Ray. I can’t believe this, but I don’t even remember being nervous while walking down the aisle. And I thought I would be the whole time! I kept staring at that huge smile on Scott’s face. More photos!

Day 620: WeddingRay walking me down the aisle

Day 620: WeddingBeautiful Saint Domitilla Church

Day 620: WeddingOur first kiss!

My Uncle John read the first reading and my friend Brittany read the second reading. Father Tim had a very nice homily mentioning us and talking about marriage. He did accidentally say, “It’s a beautiful day for a funeral” instead of wedding, but I thought it was funny! He looked embarrassed, though, and mentioned how he had a funeral that morning. It was definitely one of the topics that evening! Scott and I then exchanged vows and rings, and then had our first kiss. My Uncle Tom then read the prayer of the faithful and I then walked over to the statue of Mary and prayed to her. Then the ceremony was over! It really was beautiful. We then took photos after the wedding. Here are some more, of course!

Day 620: Wedding

I couldn’t resist posting this last photo! Poor Kendyl was having a long day and was tired of taking photos, so she started tearing up a bit. We got a photo of all of us staring at her. I think it’s pretty funny!

After taking photos at the church, we took even more photos at Graue Mill. The limo ride was really fun; we were all a bit crammed in there, but we got to drink champagne and hang out! I really liked it. It was fun being with the whole bridal party.

Day 620: WeddingThe bridal party!

Day 620: WeddingI made this photo a bit bigger so you could see awesome jumping skills!

After all of the photos here,  it was time to party at Carlisle Banquets! The reception was such an awesome time. I really had a good time in the receiving line talking to everyone and getting many hugs! We had a cocktail and hors d’oevres hour during the receiving line and I loved our signature drinks. We had a Brito Mojito and Scott Spritzer! I drank a Scott Spritzer during dinner and really liked it. Here’s a photo of the room with the cake.

Day 620: Wedding

For our cake topper, Scott had a cardinals logo on his shirt and I had a Cubs logo on my dress. We are standing on a baseball field, too! It’s cute. Our favors were lottery tickets; I think the big winner of the night won $10. Too bad nobody won anything higher! After the cocktail hour, the bridal party was introduced, as well as Scott and me. We then cut the cake and my cousin Kim said the prayer. Ray and Andrea made speeches and both were great! For dinner, everyone had a choice of sirloin steak, salmon filet, or chicken picatta. I ate the chicken picatta and it was great! More photos:

Day 620: Wedding

For dessert, we had our wedding cake (vanilla cake with chocolate mousse) and vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup. Yum! We played a slideshow during dinner with photos of us, too. After dinner, Scott and I had our first dance, then Ray and I danced, and then Scott and his mom shared a dance together. Guess what? More photos:

Day 620: Wedding

The rest of the night was filled with awesome dancing and wonderful company! My cousin Hannah caught the bouquet and Scott’s friend David caught the garter. I can’t believe how many people were out on the dance floor; it was great! We even did some dances like the electric slide and Cotton Eye Joe. It’s insane how much fun I had! Here are some dancing photos:

Day 620: Wedding

After the reception, Scott and I walked into our hotel room to see rose petals all around the room and a bottle of champagne on the table! Thank you, Melissa! We visited friends and family members all around the hotel and had a great time hanging out with everyone in hotel rooms and in the lobby area. Breakfast the next morning with everyone in the meeting room was awesome, too!

You know, I didn’t really like the planning part for the wedding, but when I look back on the actually day, it was amazing. Everything went perfectly and I felt happy and loved the entire day. I think I was mostly in awe by the fact that all of those people were there because they love us and we love them. I cannot thank everyone enough for being there and for their generosity. Scott and I are both very lucky people to have such wonderful family and friends. And I personally felt (and still feel) so lucky to have Scott, especially during the ceremony. I felt loved just looking at him and repeating our vows. I could not have asked for a better husband, a better partner, and a better friend. I love you very much!

I also want to thank everyone who helped out with the wedding and who had to listen to me rant about it occasionally. Also, thank you to Barb and Jeff for an amazing rehearsal dinner and for helping us out with things; you are both amazing in-laws! Thank you to everyone who threw bachelor and bachelorette parties, and of course the bridal showers! Thank you to our bridal party; you are all amazing, wonderful, kind, and crazy awesome people and I’m so glad you were part of the wedding! Thank you to the readers during the ceremony; you all did a great job! Thank you to Maggie for finding my inhaler and Scott’s vest! Thank you to everyone who came to the wedding and I hope you had as much fun as I did! And lastly, thank you especially to my mom. This day would not have been possible without you and thank you for all of your help along the way. You did way too much for us and I hope you know how much we appreciate everything you did and everything you do. I love you very much!

I’m finally done with this post now!

Day 607: Bridal Shower Again!

Day 607: Bridal Shower Again!

Hi, folks! This past Saturday, my mom and her best friend threw a bridal shower for me! It was at Brio Tuscan Grille; that place has delicious food! Mmm, I really want to go back soon and eat again. I especially loved the caramel chocolate cake for dessert. Anyway, the first photo above is of all the wonderful presents I received from family and friends and a glimpse of the room. The second photo is of one of the tables set up nicely. There was a cute little seating chart sign in the middle and a very nice menu. I might be in love with this restaurant now! It was great seeing family and friends I haven’t seen in a while. And I feel honored and loved that everyone gathered together for me! I’ve been way too emotional about everything lately. But that’s a good thing!

Here’s a photo of the little favors for everyone (a small notepad and pen). They are so cute! And I could always use more paper.

Day 607: Bridal Shower Again!

After we ate a delicious lunch, my matron of honor (Andrea) gave a little speech and explained a game. A timer was running while I opened presents and when time was up, whoever’s present I was opening at the time won a Yankee candle! I think people enjoyed it. I got so many wonderful gifts from everyone; I don’t know how to properly thank people! It was a great day. Here are a few more photos for you.

Day 606: Bridal Shower

Hello! I had a GREAT weekend!  I might be posting a lot of pictures in this post, so bear with me. Friday night was fun; we went to a nice dinner for Scott’s grandparent’s 65th anniversary. I at some really good shrimp and we played a trivia game about his grandparents. That’s an outstanding accomplishment and I’m so happy for them! On Saturday, Stacie (Scott’s sister), Ashley (Scott’s aunt), and Barb (Scott’s mom) threw a bridal shower for me!! It was a lot of fun and so beautiful. See the above photo; I love the sign that Stacie made. She is so creative!

Ashley made all of the food and it was delicious. She even made this really good punch and I think I drank about 6 glasses. Here’s a photo of the food:

She made quiche (I hope that’s what it’s called!), really yummy yogurt parfaits, bagels, doughnuts, muffins, and fruit. I really love the set up, too; everything looks so cute and wonderful! Ashley definitely outdid herself. Stacie also made cupcakes and they were in the shape of a bridal dress. Isn’t this so cute??

Day 606: Bridal Shower

I love this and it is so pretty! We played a few games including a scratch-and-win ticket game, and questions where the guests had to guess Scott or Rachel. For example, the first question was Who knows how to play guitar? The answer is me! It was fun hearing everyone guess the answers. I got so many wonderful gifts from everyone; I don’t know how to thank everyone individually! It definitely means a lot to me that everyone is helping Scott and I start our lives together. Thank you, everyone!

I want to especially thank Barb, Ashley, and Stacie for throwing this shower. You all spent so much time on this and I REALLY want to thank you for all the cute and wonderful things you did for the shower! You have all been so wonderful to me and I’m happy to be part of your family soon. THANK YOU!

Here are a few more photos I thought I’d add!

Day 382: Pretty Cake

Rachel, Day by Day

Hello! My wonderful friend Melissa had her bridal shower this past Sunday. It was very nice! It was at Wildfire restaurant, and the food was amazing. The chopped salad there was really good, and we also ate chicken, beef tips, asparagus, mashed potatoes, and break with spinach dip. As you can see above, there was a really yummy bridal shower cake for Larry and Melissa, too! I love the wedding gown on the cake; it looks really pretty! It was fun sitting at a table with Christina, Mel, Brittany, Larry, Emily, and the parents and grandparents. We got to catch up, which was nice. Mel and Larry got some nice gifts, too; it makes me want to register for no reason! Probably not a good idea. It was a nice shower.

I got to visit my family for a bit on Sunday since the bridal shower was 5 minutes away from them! That was nice. I heard a lot of people around here had bad storms, but I luckily didn’t go through any on my drive. It’s sad how all those people died in Missouri from the tornadoes, and a hospital was torn apart. I really can’t imagine going through something like that, and hopefully never have to. My prayers are with them.

Well, I’m going to make dinner now. BBQ chicken! I hope it turns out well. I have never made it before. We’ll see I guess!
