Day 796: Turning 30

Rachel, Day by Day

201607071101

Me throughout the years.

All this time I thought I was going to dread turning 30, but I’m not worried about it at the moment. I mean, so many things happened in my 20s and I thought it would be difficult to close that chapter in my life… graduated college, first real job, first legal alcoholic drink, first car, first apartment on my own, first real relationship, first time I fell in love (or thought it was at the time), first time I actually fell in love, first house, first smartphone, first (and only) marriage, first kid, and so on. A lot can happen in 10 years.

201607071103

Me throughout the years.

It’s really strange looking back. There are certain parts of my 20s I won’t miss. The bad dates and relationships in my early 20s, a horrible relationship that hurt me badly and I thought had scarred me for life, losing loved ones, being apart from my husband for a little while, struggling through every-day stresses and drama of being a young adult, and so on. The first week living on my own, I was almost robbed in the middle of the night and now I’m kind of afraid to leave windows open. I went through my 20s without my dad and somehow made it through. I lost a lot of close family members in this decade (Grandma, Uncle Pat, Aunt Carol, Grandpa) and I miss them every day.

201607071105

Me throughout the years.

While there were some bad times, I’m getting somewhat sentimental remembering the good times. I was able to live with some amazing friends during college and I’m glad I live closer to them today! It’s crazy thinking how we used to stay out until 3 a.m. many nights; I don’t think I could do that now! We had some awesome and silly times together. I met some great friends at my first real job, and sadly we are all scattered in different places now. I stayed in touch with some high school friends, which has been great. I went on a lot of awesome trips with my mom, Ray, and other family members, and had many fun nights with them in general. I met the love of my life during college and later married him. I got some great in-laws out of this, too! Our child recently came into this world and it’s been wonderful getting to know him and having him in my life. I went on some great trips with friends and family, including Mexico, Michigan, Las Vegas, a road trip to California, Cedar Point, a cruise, San Antonio, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, Paris, Miami Beach, Punta Cana, Ireland, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and so on! I swam with dolphins, met the Stanley Cup, found a Corner Bakery not on a corner, went to numerous Cubs games, met Jonathan Toews numerous times, saw friends and family members get married, went parasailing, climbed up the steps of Notre Dame Cathedral, saw the Grand Canyon, got engaged, got married, had a child, and much more.

201607071106

Me throughout the years.

Even with the bad times, I know I’ll be able to look back on my 20s and smile. They are definitely a time for learning and growing. I don’t regret the bad relationships and I don’t feel stupid about them anymore. In fact, I came out of them a stronger and more confident person (I could still work on the confidence part just a little bit). I used to be so naïve in my early 20s, and feel like I’m out of that phase now. But, I’m still the silly, weird, caring, worrisome, funny, loving, sensitive girl from birth. Just a little bit older. So this decade made me part of who I am today.

What do I look forward to in my 30s? Definitely watching my son grow and taking him to new places. Spending time with family and friends. Spending time with my wonderful and amazing husband. Going to Cuba (which would be absolutely amazing). And watching the Cubs win the World Series. The Blackhawks could win another Stanley Cup, too.

Day 758: Details

February 2015 Photo a Day: Day 9

Day 758: Details

Details of my wedding flowers.

Happy Monday! Today I had to take a photo of details. That is a general topic, so the options were wide open! I decided to take a photo of my wedding flowers (see above). I still have them in a vase and they are all dried out. They definitely don’t have the pretty look they had on my wedding day anymore, but that’s OK. I like the vintage look! You can sort of tell those flowers used to be lavender and white. They don’t smell as nice anymore, either. But, I’m sentimental and want to keep them!

Today was a typical Monday full of work. Anyone watch the Grammy Awards last night? I watched parts of it; I couldn’t really get into it I guess. It’s not my favorite show, but I liked a lot of the music. As weird as she is, I really like Sia’s song Chandelier. And Kristen Wiig’s random appearance was awesome! Good times.

Well, time to go relax! Enjoy your night. And also, happy birthday to Tom Hiddleston!

2014 was a great year! There were many great times with family and friends and I have so much to be thankful for. Time really has flown by and I can’t believe 2014 is almost over. From family gatherings on weekends to a trip to Las Vegas, we did a lot this year! 2014 ending makes me sad in a way. The majority of the year had great times, but there were also some tough times, too. But, I had Scott, family, and friends by my side, which has always been a great feeling. • Movies I saw for the first time: The Hulk, Man of Steel, The Illusionist, Hoop Dreams, Saving Mr. Banks, Gone Girl, Interstellar, Bull Durham, The Godfather, and probably more

Sorry, that was a long list! The toughest part of this year was losing my Aunt Carol in August. She was a very caring a special woman and I’m still having a hard time without her. I can’t imagine how her children, grandchildren, and husband must be feeling. But, we have definitely been there for each other through this difficult time. I miss her so much. It really hurts sometimes.

One great thing I was able to accomplish this year was that I finished scanning all of my mom and dad’s old photos. This project took years, and I’m finally done! I’m so glad we have all of them as digital copies. I should make 1,000 copies, just in case!

Overall, this year was a good one. I have so many wonderful people in my life and I’m glad I got to spend time with them. There were some changes this year, but I think they are for the better. I can’t wait to see what will happen in 2015! I think it will be a good year, too, especially since I have Scott and great family and friends to make memories with. Goodbye 2014, and welcome 2015!

Day 726: Anne and Ted’s Wedding

Rachel, Day by Day

Day 726: Anne and Ted's Wedding

Anne and her dad walking down the aisle.

My friends Anne and Ted are now married! They’ve been dating since summer 2004, so it was very exciting to see them getting married 10 years later! Their wedding was so beautiful; I definitely cried as she walked down the aisle (see above photo). The ceremony was at a beautiful church in Oak Park called St. Edmund Parish. It’s a very gothic-looking church with tall, detailed ceilings. The bridesmaids wore dark purple dresses; I loved the color! Here’s a photo of Anne and Ted exchanging vows:

Day 726: Anne and Ted's Wedding

I love Anne’s dress and hair; everything looked perfect on her! After the wedding, we had a few hours to kill, so Scott and I went to Pinstripes in Oak Brook for a drink. There was a wedding going on there, too, and we were asked a few times if we were part of the reception. We joked about crashing it, but never actually did! I don’t think I could actually do that.

Anne and Ted’s reception was really fun and amazing! They had a movie theme; our table was Harry Potter. They had signature drinks called The Emerald City and The Dark Knight; they also had a candy table! There were so many cute little touches. Here’s a photo of the room for you:Day 726: Anne and Ted's WeddingI can’t believe most of my high school friends are getting married and having kids. I’ve known Anne since 1997; I met her when we were young middle schoolers. We had homeroom together one year, which brought us closer. We were friends all through middle and high school, and even went to U of I together! We stayed close in college by going out and working at the Daily Illini together. I miss those days a bit since I got to see her more often! We’ve definitely grown up since our middle and high school days. Scott and I sat at a table with Andrea and Warren, too. I’ve known Andrea since 3rd grade and she was my maid of honor at our wedding. It was great catching up with her! Her kids are growing up so fast; I really can’t believe it. Here’s a photo of the four of us:

Day 726: Anne and Ted's Wedding

From left to right: Scott, me, Andrea, and Warren.

Back to talking about the reception! They had a photo booth in one of the corners, so we had some fun with that. I had a fun time dancing with Scott and the ladies; sometimes I wish I could dance more often! I’m not that great at it, though. Here’s another photo of some fun ladies:

What a great night! I’m so happy for Anne and Ted. Congrats to you both!!

Day 724: Best/Worst of the Week

Rachel, Day by Day

Day 724: Best/Worst of the Week

Here’s our awesome lawn decoration!

What a fun and busy week! Here’s the worst and the best for you.

Worst
1. Didn’t feel so good a day this week. I think it was my asthma.
2. I forgot to take my allergy medicine one of the days, which gave me sinus trouble.
3. Hearing about the Ebola virus every day.
4. Seeing a pretty bad accident on the highway this week. Drive safe, everyone!
5. It’s getting dark earlier in the day… I’m not ready for winter!

Best

1. Anne and Ted’s Wedding!
2. Got a lot of work and errands done this week.
3. Chicago Blackhawks started playing this week! And they won on Thursday!
4. Seeing many bunnies this week in our front yard.
5. My brother’s early birthday dinner at Benihana.

Have a good weekend!

Day 721: Laura and Tyler’s Wedding

Day 721: Laura and Tyler's Wedding

Laura and Tyler exchanging vows.

Yesterday I attended the lovely wedding of my friends Laura and Tyler! There they are above exchanging vows at their ceremony. They look so cute together! Their ceremony was at a beautiful Lutheran church. I really liked the readings and the sermon. Laura looked absolutely beautiful in her dress! After the ceremony, we all lined up to see them exit the church; we blew bubbles at them, too. Here’s more photos for you:

My lovely friends (Anne, Jillian, Liz) and me.

Day 721: Laura and Tyler's Wedding

The happy couple!

My friends and I had a little free time between the ceremony and reception, so we hung out at the hotel. The reception was at the Hilton Garden Inn; it was a beautiful place! There were some appetizers and drinks before the reception started; I had fun mingling with everyone. Tyler’s brother then gave his best man speech while Laura’s sisters sang and danced to the song Sisters from the White Christmas movie. It was cute! Here’s a photo I got with the bride:

Day 721: Laura and Tyler's Wedding

Me and the beautiful bride!

After eating a delicious dinner full of salad, pasta, fish, veggies, and fruit, it was time to dance! I had a lot of fun on the dance floor with friends and coworkers. I was out there a lot; maybe that’s why I’m so tired today! The cake was yummy, too; I ate a piece of chocolate. We got a lot more silly photos, including this one of the boys:

Steve, Drew, and Scott!

We stayed and danced until the very end of the wedding. Afterwards, we hung out at the hotel a while longer until we got tired. What a fun night! I miss dancing; I wish I had the chance more often.

Yay for beautiful weddings and congrats to Laura and Tyler!

Day 719: Best and Worst of the Week

Rachel, Day by Day

Day 719: Best and Worst of the Week

Here’s my Jonathan Toews bobblehead I keep at work. He keeps me company. Thank you, Steve!

Here you go! The best and the worst highlights from this week.

Worst of the Week
1. Finding a red bag in front of our house with two cats inside it. I hope the cats are OK.
2. My butt hurts from sitting many hours each day.
3. Hearing people hammering and drilling all morning while I tried to work. This happened most of the week.
4. I stubbed my toe at the grocery store and my toenail cracked a bit.
5. My allergies were pretty darn bad this week.

Best of the Week
1. Drinking a smoothie on my dad’s birthday this past Tuesday. He used to like making smoothies with me.
2. Laura and Tyler’s wedding!! And seeing friends at the wedding!
3. I love eating soup in autumn weather; it’s a warm fuzzy feeling. I think I ate soup twice this week.
4. Beautiful weather this week! And hanging out with Scott’s family in their outdoor deck on Friday!
5. Writing Scott a postcard from Chicago when I went last Saturday and Sunday. Yep, I’m silly.

Day 689: Anniversary

Rachel, Day by Day

Day 689: Anniversary

Hello, everyone! Scott and I celebrated our first wedding anniversary over the last weekend in April. We spent the weekend in beautiful Chicago! Here’s a photo of us above before heading out on the town. I stole this 1 Year idea from Pinterest and other folks, but I thought it was fun! We can see how we’ve grown together by our 50th anniversary.

We spent some time over at Navy Pier since Scott has never been there before. We even went on the Ferris wheel; I haven’t done that in years! Scott got a little scared as we got higher on the wheel. I was getting a little nervous, too! It was a beautiful view of the city, though. Here’s a photo of Scott enjoying Navy Pier.

Day 689: Anniversary

We then walked back to the hotel and got ready for our night. We spent the evening on The Odyssey dinner cruise on Lake Michigan! It was an amazing time. The inside of the cruise was beautiful and colorful; I guess they renovated their boats a few years ago. Here’s a photo of it for you.

Day 689: Anniversary

Right when we walked on the cruise, our waiter gave us a complimentary glass of champagne. That was a good start! The weather was windy and a bit cold, but we went outside to the top of the boat a few times. Our meal was amazing; the first course was a pumpkin soup and the second course had a salad and little crab cake. For our main meals, Scott has seafood pasta and I had salmon. Here I am enjoying my champagne!

Day 689: AnniversaryThere was a DJ on the boat and he was awesome. I actually felt like I was at a wedding reception most of the time. He announced that it was our anniversary and there were flower petals on our table for the occasion. We even got a complimentary piece of chocolate cake to share for our anniversary! It was yummy. After dinner, we walked around the boat and danced the night away. I had a lot of fun dancing! They even played our first dance song from our wedding (Can’t Help Falling in Love). I got a little emotional at that for some reason. We danced to some other fun songs, including The Cupid Shuffle. A couple actually got engaged on the cruise, too! Here’s a beautiful view from the top of the boat.

Day 689: AnniversaryIsn’t Chicago beautiful?? I love this place! After the cruise, we took a cab back to our hotel and tried our wedding cake from a year ago. We also had our anniversary wine we received from Stacie (thank you!). She gave us a bottle of wine to share on our wedding night and another bottle to share on our first anniversary. Here’s a photo for you of the wine and cake.

Day 689: Anniversary

The wedding cake was not so great. The actual cake part and the chocolate mousse inside was OK, but the frosting tasted nasty. It just tasted like old frosting that’s been sitting out for a year. Ugh, I wish I could forget that taste! Oh well. We just had a few bites of it and I was done!

My first year with Scott was amazing. From spending time with wonderful family and friends, to date nights and movie nights, to wonderful trips to Punta Cana and Paris. I can’t believe we did all of that in one year; how can we top that?? I know relationships aren’t always easy and they have their ups and downs, but I can’t wait to spend the next billion years with him and see what our future holds.

Have a good day!!
